A basic puzzle game with great challenges

Akin is a 2D puzzle game with a simple premise but a challenging number of solutions. The goal of this indie title from ThinkOfGames is to draw a line across a number of tiles to change their colors and make sure all of them match.

Much like in games like Line Path, players cannot cross tiles they’ve already written a line across in Akin. However, there are numerous ways you can solve a single round, so you don’t have to worry about having to make specific moves in order to make it past a level.

Play normally or time yourself

As already mentioned, Akin is a simple 2D game that’s easy for players to pick up, regardless if you’ve played similar games before or not. Don’t let the simplicity of this indie game fool you, though; with two gameplay modes with 96 puzzles each, there’s still a variety of mind-boggling challenges ahead for you to solve while also collecting achievements along the way.

Each round presents a different puzzle with some of them featuring special tiles that will add an extra level of difficulty. Players can choose to play Normal mode — which will allow you to ponder on the next best move for as long as you need — or Time mode — where you will have to complete the puzzles within a specified time limit.

However, it’s important to note that some actions can feel quite laggy even when connected to a stable internet connection. This can present a challenge in Time mode since making certain moves will only eat up your time instead of allowing you to move on to the next set of tiles. Some of the latter puzzles can also be unnecessarily difficult to complete.

Could use a few improvements

All in all, Akin is definitely a great choice for anyone who wants to train their brain with a number of complicated puzzles. With simple mechanics, it’s easy enough for new players to learn in no time at all. However, there is some work to be done when it comes to the response speed of the game’s controls, especially when you’re short on time.

PROS

  • Mechanics are easy to learn
  • Has two modes with 96 puzzles for each one
  • Numerous achievements for you to collect

CONS

  • Controls can feel a bit slow
  • Some levels are too difficult to complete
